What Happens If You Lose Your Ledger Device but Have the Recovery Phrase

You can recover full access to all your cryptocurrency. The recovery phrase (seed phrase) is the master key to your accounts. Losing the physical device is an inconvenience, not a catastrophe, as long as you keep the recovery phrase safe and private.

The recovery phrase is the only thing that matters for regaining control. The device itself is replaceable. If you have the correct 24-word recovery phrase, you can restore your entire portfolio to a new ledger-guide/ledger-genuine-check-how-it-works/">Ledger device or a compatible software wallet.

What the recovery phrase actually does

Your Ledger device never stores your cryptocurrency. It stores the private keys that let you move it. Those private keys are mathematically derived from your recovery phrase.

When you set up a new Ledger, the device generates the recovery phrase using a random number generator. That phrase is the seed from which every private key for every blockchain account is created. If you lose the device but keep the phrase, you still own the private keys. The coins remain in their addresses on the blockchain, accessible to anyone who holds those keys.

Step-by-Step: Restoring to a New Ledger

If you buy a replacement Ledger or already own a second one, the restoration process takes about 10 - 15 minutes.

  1. Download and install Ledger Live on your computer or phone. Only use the official site (ledger.com). Fake apps exist and will steal your phrase.
  2. Connect your new Ledger device via USB or Bluetooth and turn it on.
  3. Select "Restore from recovery phrase" when the device prompts you to choose between setting up as a new device or restoring.
  4. Enter your 24-word recovery phrase directly on the device using the physical buttons. Never type it into a computer, phone, or take a photo of it. The Ledger device accepts the words one at a time from its built-in word list.
  5. Set a new PIN code for the new device. This PIN protects the physical device only. It does not change your recovery phrase or create new accounts.
  6. Open Ledger Live and add the same blockchain apps you used before (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). The accounts will reappear with their original balances and transaction history.

The recovery phrase restores everything: all accounts, all tokens on supported chains, and all transaction history. Nothing is lost.

What if you don't buy another ledger?

You can use the recovery phrase with compatible software wallets. This is less secure than a hardware wallet because the private keys are handled by software on a general-purpose computer, but it works for emergency access.

Wallets that accept BIP39 recovery phrases include: - Electrum (Bitcoin) - MetaMask (Ethereum and EVM chains) - Trust Wallet - Coinomi - Exodus

The same rule applies: enter the phrase directly into the wallet software. Never type it anywhere else.

Important: the passphrase (25th word)

If you used a BIP39 passphrase (often called the 25th word) with your original Ledger, the 24-word recovery phrase alone will restore an empty set of accounts. You need both the 24-word phrase and the exact passphrase, including uppercase and lowercase letters and special characters, to recover the accounts that were protected by it.

Without the passphrase, the accounts that used it are permanently inaccessible. The 24-word phrase restores only the base accounts.

What you should do immediately after losing the device

  1. Do not panic. Your funds are safe if the recovery phrase is secure.
  2. Check that the recovery phrase is still in its secure location. If it was stored near the lost device, assume it is compromised and move funds as soon as you restore.
  3. Do not buy a used Ledger from eBay or any secondhand seller. Tampered devices exist. Buy directly from Ledger or an authorized retailer.
  4. Restore to a new device as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more risk you take if someone finds your recovery phrase.

What the Lost Device Means for Security

A lost Ledger is a privacy risk but not a financial one, assuming the PIN was never revealed. The device wipes itself after three wrong PIN attempts. Even if someone finds the device and guesses the PIN, they cannot extract the recovery phrase from it. Ledger devices use a secure element chip designed to prevent physical extraction of keys.

The real threat is someone finding your written recovery phrase, not the device itself. If you stored the phrase separately from the device, you have nothing to worry about except the cost of a replacement.

One more thing: do not move funds unnecessarily

If you restore to a new device and see all your balances, you do not need to create new accounts or send funds anywhere. The restored accounts are the same accounts. Your addresses, balances, and transaction history are identical to what they were on the lost device. Moving funds to "new" accounts would cost network fees and accomplish nothing.
