Ledger not recognized by computer USB connection troubleshooting
A Ledger that connects to power but does not appear in Ledger Live or your computer’s device list is almost always a USB communication failure, not a hardware fault. The device draws power from the USB port, so a lit screen can mislead you into thinking the data connection is working when it is not.
The USB data layer
Ledger devices communicate over USB using the Human Interface Device (HID) protocol. Your operating system sees the Ledger as a special-purpose input device, not a standard storage drive. If the HID driver is missing, corrupted, or blocked by another program, the computer will not recognize the device even though it is powered.
Cable check: charge-only vs. data-capable
Many USB cables carry power but not data. This is common with cables sold only for charging phones or with magnetic charging adapters. Use the original cable that came with your Ledger, or a cable you have verified works for data transfer with another device. A cable that charges your phone may not work for HID communication.
Windows Troubleshooting
On Windows, the most common cause is a driver conflict with the generic HID driver. Open Device Manager. Look under "Human Interface Devices" for "HID-compliant device" entries that show a yellow warning triangle. Right-click any such entry, select "Update driver," then "Browse my computer for drivers," then "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer." Choose "HID-compliant device" from the list and install it.
If that does not work, uninstall any "Ledger" or "HID" entries under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" in Device Manager. Disconnect the Ledger, restart the computer, and reconnect it. Windows should reinstall the driver fresh.
Check that no other application is claiming the HID interface. Ledger Live must be the only program communicating with the device. Close browser tabs that access WebUSB (like MetaMask or Solflare) before connecting.
Try a different USB port. USB 3.0 ports sometimes have power delivery issues with older Ledger models. A USB 2.0 port on the back of the computer is often more reliable. Do not use a USB hub. Connect directly to the computer.
macOS Troubleshooting
macOS typically handles HID devices without extra drivers. If your Ledger is not recognized, the problem is usually a cable or port issue, or a background process.
Open System Information (hold Option key, click Apple menu, select System Information). Under USB, look for "Ledger" or "HID" devices. If the device appears here but not in Ledger Live, the application is not receiving the connection. Restart Ledger Live. If it still fails, uninstall and reinstall Ledger Live entirely.
Disable any VPN or security software that might block USB device enumeration. Some corporate security policies restrict HID devices. If you are on a managed computer, you may need IT approval.
Try a different USB port. On MacBooks with USB-C, use a direct USB-C to USB-C cable if your Ledger supports it, or a high-quality USB-C to USB-A adapter. Avoid cheap adapters that pass power but not data.
Bootloader Mode
A Ledger in bootloader mode behaves differently. The screen shows "Bootloader" or a similar message. In this state, the device is not running the normal operating system. Ledger Live cannot connect to it for normal use. You must exit bootloader mode by holding both buttons for a few seconds until the device restarts. If you are updating firmware, bootloader mode is intentional and the process handles it automatically.
Do not confuse bootloader mode with a broken connection. If the device shows "Bootloader" and you are not updating firmware, it is stuck in a state that requires a restart. Press both buttons simultaneously and hold for five seconds. The device should reboot into the normal menu.
When the Problem Is Not the Cable
If you have tried multiple cables, multiple ports, and both operating systems, the issue may be with the Ledger itself. A damaged USB connector on the device or a failed HID controller inside the Ledger can prevent data communication while still allowing power. This is rare but possible. Contact Ledger Support for hardware replacement.
