Ledger Nano X Screen Too Dim or Unreadable: How to Fix

If your Ledger Nano X screen appears too dim, faded, or completely unreadable, the issue is usually a display brightness setting, a low battery, or a temporary firmware glitch. In most cases you can restore normal screen visibility in under five minutes without replacing the device.

Check the brightness setting first

The Ledger Nano X has an adjustable screen brightness that can be set very low by accident. This is the most common cause of a dim display.

1. Press the left button to wake the device. If you cannot see anything, try holding the device under a bright light or shining a phone flashlight directly at the screen. Even a very dim screen is often readable with external light.
2. If you can see enough to navigate, press both buttons simultaneously to open the Control Center.
3. Scroll to the Settings icon (the gear symbol) and press both buttons to select it.
4. Select Screen then Brightness.
5. Use the buttons to increase the brightness to at least 3 or 4 bars.
6. Press both buttons to confirm and exit.

If the screen remains unreadable even with brightness at maximum, move to the next steps.

Charge the Battery

A nearly depleted battery can cause the screen to appear unusually dim or flicker. The Nano X uses a lithium-ion battery that needs a minimum charge level to drive the display at full brightness.

• Connect the device to a USB power source using the original cable. A standard phone charger, computer USB port, or power bank all work.
• Leave it charging for at least 30 minutes before checking the screen again.
• If the screen stays dark during charging, press the left button once to wake it. The charging indicator (a small battery icon) should appear briefly.

A common mistake is using a USB cable that only supports data transfer and not power. Try a different cable if the device does not show any charging activity.

Force restart the device

If brightness and battery are not the problem, the firmware may have entered a state where the display driver is not initializing correctly. A full restart often clears this.

1. Hold down the left button for about 10 seconds. The screen should go completely blank.
2. Release the button and wait 5 seconds.
3. Press the left button once to turn the device back on.

The Ledger logo should appear at normal brightness. If the screen remains unreadable after the restart, try connecting the device to Ledger Live on a computer or phone. If Ledger Live recognizes the device (shows the account dashboard or device name), the screen is the only problem and the device is still functional.

Update or reinstall firmware

An outdated or corrupted firmware version can cause display problems. Updating through Ledger Live may resolve the issue.

1. Open Ledger Live on your computer.
2. Connect the Nano X via USB. Bluetooth pairing is not recommended during firmware updates.
3. If the device is recognized, go to Settings > Device firmware and follow the update prompts.
4. If the device is not recognized but the computer detects it (a USB connection sound or device manager entry), try the force restart steps above before attempting the update again.

If the screen is too dim to confirm the firmware update on the device itself, you may not be able to complete this process. In that case, contact Ledger support.

When the screen is physically damaged

A dim or unreadable screen that does not respond to brightness changes, charging, or restarting may indicate a hardware defect. Common signs of physical screen damage include:

• Dark patches or lines across the display
• The screen appears completely black but the device vibrates or makes a connection sound when plugged in
• The screen was exposed to pressure, drops, or liquid

The Ledger Nano X screen is not user-replaceable. If you suspect physical damage, the device should be treated as compromised. Do not enter your recovery phrase into any computer or online tool. Transfer your funds to a new wallet using the existing device if you can still see enough to confirm transactions, or use your recovery phrase to restore your accounts on a replacement Ledger device.

Contact Ledger Support

If none of the above steps work, the device likely has a manufacturing defect or internal component failure. Ledger provides a warranty for devices purchased from the official store. Go to support.ledger.com and open a ticket. Include:

• A description of the screen behavior
• Steps you have already tried
• The serial number found on the back of the device or the original packaging

Do not send your recovery phrase to anyone, including Ledger support. No legitimate support request will ever ask for it.

Prevent the Problem from Returning

• Keep the device away from extreme heat or direct sunlight, which can degrade the display over time.
• Store the device with a charge between 30% and 80% if you do not use it regularly. A completely drained battery left for months can cause display issues.
• Update firmware promptly when Ledger releases new versions. Older firmware may have uncorrected display bugs.

A dim screen on a Ledger Nano X is almost always fixable without replacing the hardware. Work through the steps in order, and you will likely have a readable display again within minutes.
